摘要：Although electricity is an essential input in manufacturing production, empirical studies find the negative effect of power outages on firm productivity is modest in the short run. This paper develops a multi-product firm model and finds one possible explanation for these results in the empirical literature. Multi-product firms in the model prune their less-productive product lines, which offsets the negative shock from power outages. Using a city-level measure of power outages constructed from newspaper coverage and firm-level export and production data, we find the responses of Chinese firms are consistent with our model predictions.
