Abstracts：This paper studies the implications of export liberalization for firm innovation and aggregate growth, emphasizing the role of inter-firm knowledge diffusion. We develop a quantifiable general equilibrium model of trade and firm innovation in which knowledge diffuses across domestic firms via a highly selective network. In the presence of inter-firm knowledge networks, non-exporting firms can benefit indirectly from export liberalization by learning from exporting firms. The magnitude of this indirect effect depends crucially on the structure of inter-firm knowledge networks. Using the unique dataset on patent citations across Chinese manufacturing firms, we estimate the model's key parameters that govern inter-firm knowledge diffusion. Simulations of the model show that inter-firm knowledge networks account for about one third of the increase in Chinese real income induced by its trade liberalization over 2001-2006.
